3，本书：the problem of mourning. 面对苦难，人们会为这样的事实而哀悼：不能生活在更好的可能世界。

作者的主张：在苦难中的成人（人的成全）比没有堕落世界中的成人更荣耀。值得哀悼的痛苦是有其补偿性的好处的。

书评者的质疑：1，存在极端的恶【让我想起了萨德】；2，那些没有在苦难中挺过来的人（失败者），怎么办？；3，作者所预设的形而上学：一个有苦难的必要的世界——这是可接受的吗？
